The Pope has died unexpectedly. Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) is entrusted with the difficult task of presiding over the election of the new pope. Powerful cardinals from all over the world travel to Rome for the conclave. As the doors to the Sistine Chapel close, a game of power ensues. Cardinal Lawrence finds himself at the center of intrigue and corruption and uncovers a secret that could shake the very foundations of his faith. All this while millions of people wait for white smoke to rise from the chimney of the chapel...
