As a sign of solidarity with Ukraine, the ifs is showing films related to the war in Ukraine in its new series »ifs Encounters« #standwithukraine.
The documentary »The Trial – The State of Russia vs. Oleg Sentsov« premiered at the Berlinale 2017 and screened at numerous festivals.

In May 2014, the Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov was arrested by the Russian secret service for alleged terrorist activities and brought to Moscow. He had previously protested peacefully against the Russian annexation of Crimea. Sentsov never pleaded guilty. Despite a lack of evidence, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison by a Russian military court.

The Uzbek director Askold Kurov, who lives in Russia, followed the trial of Oleg Sentsov. He meticulously researches the truth behind the political show trial and exposes the absurdity of the court proceedings. At the same time, he documents the efforts of Sentsov‘s family, friends and lawyers to secure his release.
After a 145-day hunger strike in a Siberian penal colony, Oleg Sentsov was released in 2019: five years in prison were behind him. Today he is fighting Russian troops in Ukraine.
Maxim Tuula produced »The Trial – The State of Russia vs. Oleg Sentsov« together with Maria Gavrilova, with whom he also founded the production company »Marx Film« in Tallinn in 2012. The most recent film »How Big Is the Galaxy?« was awarded Best European Children‘s Documentary at Zlín Film Festival 2020.
