INTERFILM 40 | Case Study: Franzis Kabisch – getty abortions / New Approaches to the Abortion Narrative – Media, Activism and Personal Stories in the Desktop Essay Film

Das sagt der/die Veranstalter:in:

Franzis Kabisch's "getty abortions" is more than a film – it represents a brave discourse about abortion, while encompassing activism, research and innovative media criticism. Inspired by the work of cultural researcher Erica Millar, this desktop essay film exposes stereotypical depictions and challenges predominant visual language, constructions of heteronormative values and the nuclear family as a "happy ending". Kabisch employs found-footage archives and stock photos to reveal the homogenisation of medial narratives and write new emotional scripts. Using her personal story as an emotional anchor, she creates a new narrative form that is sensitive, immediate and humorous – a radical counterweight to common portrayals of abortion in the media. There have been intensive spontaneous conversations with local audiences following her screenings, opening up space for exchange and reflection, and this event is sure to be no exception. A film that does more than just show – it challenges and changes as well.
