KOSMISCHE BROCKEN – Zum 30. Todestag von Frank Zappa

Der Dokumentarfilm ‘KOSMISCHE BROCKEN – Frank Zappa und die Deutschen‘ versucht zu ergründen, was das besondere Verhältnis zwischen Zappa und seinen deutschen Fans ausmacht. 

Warum wird das Erbe eines der schillerndsten und kontroversesten Musiker der Rockgeschichte ausgerechnet an der deutschen Ostseeküste bewahrt? Und was lockt  seit über 30 Jahren Musiker aus Zappas Bands, Fans, Zappateers und Freunde schräger Musik aus aller Welt jeden Sommer wieder in die deutsche Provinz? 

Die Dreharbeiten für diesen Film haben vor 30 Jahren, drei Tage nach Zappas Tod, begonnen. In Interviews mit diesen Musikern wie Jean-Luc Ponty, Don Preston, Bunk Gardner, Robert Martin, George Duke u.v.a., mit Musikjournalisten, Sammlern, Fans, Zappateers und Zappologen zeichnet KOSMISCHE BROCKEN das Bild einer eingeschworenen Gemeinschaft, für die Zappa mehr als ein vielfältiger Komponist und Rockmusiker war.

ONE city, ONE cinema, ONE performance: KOSMISCHE BROCKEN - Frank Zappa and the Germans

On the 30th anniversary of Frank Zappa's death, an unusual music documentary is coming to cinemas. KOSMISCHE BROCKEN tells the story of Frank Zappa's fans, of music lovers who were struck by a stubborn passion at an early age in both West and East Germany. The film attempts to explore what Zappa, one of the most colorful and controversial figures in rock history, has in common with his German fans.

Why is his legacy preserved in, of all places, a small holiday resort on the German Baltic Sea coast? And what has been attracting Zappa musicians, fans, Zappateers and friends of weird music from all over the world to the German countryside every summer for over 30 years?

Filming for this film began 30 years ago, three days after Zappa's death with a first interview with the original mothers Jimmy Carl Black, Bunk Gardner and Don Preston. 

Over the years, conversations have been added with many Zappa musicians such as George Duke, Jean-Luc Ponty, Robert Martin, Adrian Belew, Ali N. Askin and many others. In interviews with these musicians, with music journalists, collectors, fans, Zappateers and Zappologen KOSMISCHE BROCKEN paints the picture of a tight-knit community that bravely defends itself against the sound patterns and exploitation strategies of the music industry and thus keeps a musical avant-garde alive that threatens to dry up on the edges of the mainstream.
