Our cheap fruit and vegetables come at a high price. It is produced not least at the expense of migrants, sometimes under precarious conditions. But we are dependent on the work of these people. Join us in discussing what humane and environmentally friendly agriculture could look like.
Cheap fruit and vegetables from southern Europe: what many of us take for granted comes at a high price for local people and the environment. A large proportion of agricultural workers are (undocumented) migrants, whose living and working conditions are often particulary precarious because of their status. They live in informal settlements or impoverished conditions, are subjected to racism and exploitation, and have neither legal protection nor access to health care.
Their situation seems even more dire considering the current Europe-wide discourse on migration that is focussed on isolationism and increasing the number of deportations. However, the figures are clear: the agricultural sector, which is particularly affected by ageing and emigration, is dependent on migrants.
This event aims to highlight the importance of migration for European agriculture, while drawing attention to precarious working conditions and practices and discussing possible solutions with a focus on the Mediterranean region. Join us in envisioning a humane and sustainable agriculture for Europe.
