Ausstellungseröffnung Relations in Place
mit Sound-Performance von Özcan Ertek 

Die Räume, in denen wir uns täglich bewegen und begegnen, sind mehr als nur unsere gebaute Umgebung. Sie sind das Produkt unserer Handlungen, Entscheidungen und Beziehungen – und beeinflussen somit, wie und wo wir ein fürsorgliches Miteinander erfahren oder Ausschluss und Kontrolle erleben. Die Ausstellung Relations in Place untersucht Räume als Beziehungsgeflechte, in denen soziale, politische und kulturelle Spannungen sichtbar werden. 

Ausgehend vom historisch aufgeladenen Ausstellungsort – einem ehemaligen Bärenkäfig im Herzen Berlins – richtet sich der Blick auf die Ambivalenzen räumlicher Praktiken: Wie und wo werden Macht, Fürsorge und Kontrolle räumlich verhandelt? Welche Dynamiken hinterlassen ihre Spuren in der Architektur und Nutzung von Raum? Die Werke von Vanessa Amoah Opoku & Joy Weinberger, Özcan Ertek und Zhenru Liang thematisieren diese Fragen auf unterschiedlichen räumlichen Ebenen: von der transnationalen Perspektive der Diaspora über die urbane Landschaft Berlins bis hin zum spezifischen Kontext des Bärenzwingers selbst.

Exhibition Opening Relations in Place
with a sound performance by Özcan Ertek

The spaces we inhabit and encounter each other in every day are more than just our built environment. They are the product of our actions, decisions, and relationships – and thus influence how and where we experience care and togetherness or face exclusion and control. Relations in Place examines spaces as networks of relationships in which social, political, and cultural tensions become visible.

Set against the historically charged backdrop of a former bear pit in the heart of Berlin, the exhibition highlights the complexities of spatial practices: How and where are power, care and control negotiated in space? What traces do these dynamics leave on the architecture and use of space? The works by Vanessa Amoah Opoku & Joy Weinberger, Özcan Ertek, and Zhenru Liang address these questions across different spatial dimensions: from the transnational perspective of the diaspora, to the urban fabric of Berlin, and the specific context of the Bärenzwinger itself.
