St. Pauli Kieztour english – guided by locals

There are many famous and infamous streets in the neighbourhood of St. Pauli. In the south there is the river Elbe and the Landungsbrücken where once the sailors docked. In the north more residential: with local shops, galleries and more and more gentrification. In between, joining the mainstreet Reeperbahn, lies Germany's biggest party and red light district, where you can find clubs, theatres, brothels, bars, restaurants. But besides the amusement district, St. Pauli has been an island for alternative lifestyles and underground culture. These contradictions between luxury hotels and squatted housing, cheap beer and fine cocktails, accumulation and resistance, shaped this neighbourhood. 

Our tour starts with a brief historical introduction to give you an insight how this vivid neighbourhood has developed through the centuries. We then discover the main tourist attractions such as the Große Freiheit, where the Beatles performed in the early 60s and where you can find now various discotheques and stripbars; the mainsquare Spielbudenplatz with lots of theatres, Shows and Cocktailbars; the historical red light district with street prostitution surrounding the Herbertstraße, a street with brothels. During the tour we will also visit a local bar, where you can get a drink and taste the spirit of St. Pauli.
