The Fabelmans is loosely based on Steven Spielberg's childhood growing up in post-World War II era Arizona. When the protagonist, little Sammy Fabelman, experiences a film at the cinema for the very first time with his parents in the 1950s, the experience changes his entire life: He falls madly in love with filmmaking and soon he can hardly be separated from his own camera. Through his camera lens, however, he also increasingly discovers the problems that exist in his family. When he later, as a teenager, learns of a harrowing family secret, he tries to discover a deeper truth and understanding through film.
