In Adama Bineta Sow’s film, young Khalilou lives in Dakar with his gravely ill mother, whose cancer is the result of years of skin bleaching – a painful legacy of colonial beauty ideals. Seeking justice, Khalilou transforms into “Leila” and enters a university beauty pageant to expose the system from within.
