On 10 January 2025, Notagallery will unveil The Unrequested, its first exhibition of the year, exploring art beyond the confines of market-driven validation.

Art has long been enmeshed in systems of patronage, commerce, and consumerism, shaping its creation and reception from the grand commissions of the Renaissance to today’s algorithm-driven trends. The Unrequested challenges this paradigm, inviting viewers to consider what art becomes when it exists beyond these frameworks.

Rooted in critical and philosophical discourse, the exhibition draws inspiration from theorists like Boris Groys, whose seminal work Art Power (2008) critiques the commodification of contemporary art and calls for creative freedom untethered from institutional and market dependencies. Groys’s ideas resonate throughout the exhibition, which seeks to position art as an autonomous act of resistance, speculation, and exploration.

Featuring works by a diverse roster of international artists, The Unrequested reimagines creativity as a radical, self-driven process. Each piece defies hyper-commercialized definitions of “value” or “desirability,” offering a fresh perspective on the power of artistic expression to challenge normative boundaries.

Notagallery invites audiences to reflect on art’s ability to transcend external expectations, fostering a dialogue about creativity’s role in a world increasingly dominated by consumption and commodification.
