Viagra Boys

Some say Viagra Boys is something akin to a mirror for the absurdum of existence and illusions of realness, a twisted and ferociously bass-driven judgement on western society, a distorted 24/7 party on the acid highway going nowhere fast. Or perhaps more like a crude joke on modern masculinity, serving up escapist narratives lacking any form of self-preservation; like an obscure back alley door into the backwaters of the human psyche. Metaphors aside, Viagra Boys is an unapologetically raw sextet comprised of classically trained jazz musicians, karaoke loving tattoo artists and seasoned hardcore scene veterans, churning out spastic, pulsating sounds from the sub levels of contemporary rock music - a bellowing, unstoppable force majeure of latter-day punk, PTSD disco and synthetically enhanced kraut. And as equal parts Iggy Pop and Hank Williams, singer and frontman Sebastian Murphy embodies all that which Viagra Boys are ultimately about; a fractured, perhaps disillusioned act, wrapped up and held together by inextinguishable bravado, explosive appearances and resourceful songwriting. Now, with over 180 feverish live shows to support their latest release “Street Worms” under their belt, several Grammy nominations and an Impala Award in the bag, Viagra Boys are ready to retreat back to their Stockholm studio to work on new music - but not without announcing the last victory lap for “Street Worms”, a one-off EU spring/summer 2022 tour. Now, if “Street Worms” was the shady neighbour that would not stop thrashing about and screaming profanities in the middle of the night, “Common Sense” is the shifty new roommate that cleary seemed totally fine in the Craigslist ad - but underneath that pretty smirk and clean shirt lives an erratic demon, oscillating wildly between unfathomable remorse and uncontrollable ecstasy, transmitting bursts of unruly obscenity and unforgiving pleasures. “Common Sense” is four tracks of unclassifiable post-punk, convulsing homegrown grooves and guilt-ridden crooning; a homage to straightening up and falling right back in, to unconditionally love, to inevitably lose, and to eventually come to terms with a life so completely ridiculous that in order to manage, maybe one should just indulge in all this folly and delirium - before it’s all too late.
