Vinylrausch #52 – Großes Kino mit Mingus, Van Morrison und Black Country ...

Beim Vinylrausch hören wir Vinylalben als Kunstwerke: von einer guten Anlage, laut und konzentriert im dunklen Kino-Raum, mit den Texten und Fotos parallel auf der Leinwand. 
Wir starten mit zwei echten Meisterwerken in das neue Jahr: 

Eines der überraschendsten Jazzalben überhaupt ist ‘The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady’ (1963) von Charles Mingus. Eine elfköpfige Big Band spielt große, aufbrausende Musik, die wie Filmmusik klingt, die Bilder aber im eigenen Kopf entstehen läßt. Ein herrlicher Spaß voller überraschender Wendungen. Ein Album, das unser Leben verändern kann … 

Die verblüffenden Flamenco-Tupfer auf ‘The Black Saint …‘ durfte Jay Berliner an der Gitarre setzen – dieser versierte Studiomusiker taucht fünf Jahre später auf einem weiteren Meisterwerk auf: Van Morissons Astral Weeks (1968) ist vor 55 Jahren erschienen und in seiner Mischung aus europäisch geprägten Folk-Songs und amerikanischer Jazz-Tradition eine Ausnahmeerscheinung, die man nicht oft genug auflegen kann. 

Auf ‘Ants from Up There‘ (2022) verbinden Black Country, New Road hochemotionale Texte mit einer Musik voller Finten und Fährten. Wir hören beim Vinylrausch #52 die entscheidende vierte Seite dieses Albums, das uns sicher noch beschäftigen wird.

We start the new year with two real masterpieces:

One of the most surprising jazz albums ever is 'The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady' (1963) by Charles Mingus. An eleven-piece big band plays big, effervescent music that sounds like film music, but allows the images to form in your own head. Great fun full of surprising twists. An album that can change our lives...

The astounding flamenco touches on 'The Black Saint...' were provided by Jay Berliner on guitar - this accomplished studio musician reappears five years later on another masterpiece: Van Morisson's Astral Weeks (1968) was released 55 years ago and in its mixture of European-influenced folk songs and American jazz tradition, it is an exceptional phenomenon that cannot be played often enough.

On 'Ants from Up There' (2022) Black Country, New Road combine highly emotional lyrics with music full of feints and tracks. At Vinylrausch #52 we hear the decisive fourth side of this album, which will certainly keep us busy.
