“Women in the Dark” by Ukrainian authors Iryna Serebriakova and Masha Denisova tells the story of over a dozen women trapped in Kyiv during the wartime. The play chronicles their experience in funny, sad, and creepy encounters as they grapple with the consequences of the war on everyday life. Without power supply and infrastructure, the simple maintenance of life becomes a challenge to be faced at wake, all over again.

Irina Serebryakova is a Ukrainian scriptwriter and playwright. Her play “Tinderland” won the “Transmission.UA: drama on the move” contest, which was co-organized by the British Council in 2021. It was also selected to represent new Ukrainian drama in the UK. In 2021, her mini-series “Qui suis-je?”, co-written with Jean-Philippe Andersen, won a grant from the Centre national du cinéma.

After the beginning of Russia’s full scale invasion, Serebryakova spent three months in a residency organized by the House of Europe and Czech Centers in Prague. During this time, she wrote several plays exploring the consequences of the war. Her works have been presented in stage readings in Narva, Almaty, Paris, and Prague. One of the projects in which she participated as an author premiered in Timișoara, Romania. The play is about Ukrainian refugees and was staged by Teatrul Basca.

Masha Denisova: The author prefers not to reveal their identity due to the author’s lack of vanity and desire for publicity. In their free time, the author likes to observe people, plants, and birds, drink diet soda, and sing cheerful songs in made-up languages. In their non-free time, the author sleeps and dreams of a world without dictatorships.

The reading will be in english with russian subtitles.
