Presented by JazzJazzJazz & Wadada Records. ♜ Gary Bartz & Maisha ♜ Support: Bokoya & Twit One 19.04.2020, Köln, Club Bahnhof Ehrenfeld ♜ GARY BARTZ Bartz graduated from the Baltimore City College high school and the Juilliard School; his break into the music industry came when filling in with Art Blakey's band at his father's club in Baltimore. Bartz has played with Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Max Roach, McCoy Tyner, and Jackie McLean. His group, the Ntu Troop, combined soul, funk, African music, hard bop, and avant-garde jazz. In liner notes to his album released in 1995, The Red and Orange Poems, Bartz was described by jazz critic Stanley Crouch as "one of the very best who has ever picked up the instrument". He has recorded more than 40 solo albums and over 200 as a guest artist. He won a Grammy Award in 2005 for his playing on McCoy Tyner's album Illuminations. Bartz was awarded the BNY Mellon Jazz 2015 Living Legacy Award, presented at a special ceremony at The Kennedy Center. He currently teaches at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio, when not touring. https://tinyurl.com/sz8fpfy ♜ MAISHA There’s something universal in the appeal of an escape – of finding somewhere to relax and explore your ideas. It’s a feeling which connects together the different parts of Maisha’s debut album. A deep record which provides grist for serious spiritual rumination, the music prompts internal reflection as much as it reflects the surrounds which shaped it. Each of its tracks provokes a feeling of intense revery which is timeless, on the one hand, but realised through a confluence of sounds and circumstances which are undeniably of the present. The six-piece group, led by bandleader Jake Long, bring a fresh slant to the weighty spiritual jazz tradition. Their 2016 debut EP was released through Jazz Re:freshed (whose weekly shows and record label are an institution for forward-thinking jazz), and were part of We Out Here, Brownswood’s early 2018 record which documented London’s genre-bending, jazz-influenced underground. They’ve been featured on Boiler Room, supported the Sun Ra Arkestra, and played at Church of Sound, a live series that’s quickly become a staple of the emergent scene. https://maisha.bandcamp.com/ ♜ BOKOYA Bokoya - is a Jazz/Hip Hop band. The four musicians play together as if they grew up inside a drum machine. They improvise, shape, and develop beats in the electric field of repetition and variation. Once a groove starts to vibe and people nod their heads, the audience is invited to become part of a unique improvisation. Their first drop "Introducing: Bokoya“ is a call to the jazz and instrumental beat scene. Here they organically combine influences of instrumental beat producers and Hip Hop with the character of a breathing jazz quartet. At the core of each track lies an excerpt from a live session further produced collectively. The results are songs wandering between composition and mixtape. As a live band Bokoya created a strong and original concept of composing on the spot, performing unheard songs on the stage. https://bokoya-wadada.bandcamp.com/ ♜ TWIT ONE A producer, DJ and bass-player. Best known for his work with Fleur Earth, Hulk Hodn (Testiculo Y Uno), Retrogott (Echoman & 4 Trackboy) and Miles Bonny. He is also a member of the Hi-Hat Club and the creative brain behind Augenringe unter dem Dritten Auge Records (AUDDA). lylylylylyyyy. https://soundcloud.com/twit-one
