The Bavarian Radio Choir is an ensemble of worldwide renown. Under the artistic direction of Peter Dijkstra, the choir's multifaceted musical profile is characterized. The chief conductor of the BR Choir and BRSO is Sir Simon Rattle. The choir regularly performs in its own subscription series in Munich as well as in the Bavarian broadcasting area and in important international music centers. Partners are numerous renowned orchestras, including the two orchestras of Bayerischer Rundfunk: the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Munich Radio Orchestra.

Sound & Awards

The choir frequently performs world premieres and is represented on the recording market by renowned labels. It has received numerous high-ranking awards for its CD recordings, including the Diapason d'or several times and most recently the ICMA for the album with Bruckner's Mass in E minor in the choral music category.

The Bavarian Radio Choir is held in high esteem throughout the world due to its special tonal homogeneity and stylistic versatility, which encompasses all areas of choral singing from medieval motets to contemporary works, from oratorio to opera. The focus is on large-scale choral symphonies, contemporary vocal music and cooperation with original sound ensembles such as Il Giardino Armonico and the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin.

New music with the Bavarian Radio Choir

The choir regularly presents world premieres at musica viva and in its own subscription concerts. The choir maintains special artistic links with the composer Arvo Pärt. The BR choir also occasionally commissions compositions.

Guest performances and musical partners

Guest performances take the choir to important music centers. The BR Choir is regularly represented at the festivals in Salzburg, Lucerne, Baden-Baden and at the International Organ Week in Nuremberg.

Top European orchestras, including the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics and the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, value the collaboration with the BR Choir. In the recent past, the choir has performed with conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Giovanni Antonini, Herbert Blomstedt, Andris Nelsons, Manfred Honeck, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Kent Nagano, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Riccardo Muti and Riccardo Chailly as well as Paavo Järvi and Christian Thielemann.

Educational projects of the BR Choir

In line with the educational mission of public broadcasting, the choir is often involved in educational projects. For example, it supports young soloists and conductors with engagements or within the Choral Conducting Forum and regularly opens itself up to making music together with amateurs at the cOHRwürmer sing-along concerts. In addition, the in-house CD label BR-KLASSIK regularly releases major oratorio works with in-depth introductions, including Bruckner's Mass in E minor.
