Short biography

Jo Oerter /JOO/ was born in Wiesbaden in 1960. Since 2006 he has been photographing in the style of Magical Realism on the one hand and working with a moving camera (ICM, Intended Camera Movement) on the other, now full-time as an artistic photographer and mixed-media artist.

He received his training at the Lichtblickschool Cologne (workshops and master class with Wolfgang Zurborn and Markus Schaden) and at the Fotoforum Frankfurt (with Celina Lunsford, Boris Eldagsen, Wolfgang Zurborn, Ute Noll, Jessica Backhaus, master class with Andrea Diefenbach, among others).

Exhibitions

His works have been curated by Wolfgang Zurborn and Markus Schaden (Lichtbild-Galerie in Cologne), Benny Klement (Galerie Esc-Space in Wiesbaden) as well as by international lecturers and the artistic director of Fotoforum Frankfurt, Celina Lunsford, and exhibited at Galerie Esc-Space and Blauer Salon in Wiesbaden-Biebrich, among others.

In his opening speech for the LOOM exhibition, Wolfgang Zurborn said: " ... he constantly asks the viewer the question: "What is real, what is fiction?" With this and in the interaction with the viewer and observer, he wants to explore the boundaries of recognizable reality".

His own intention

"In the beginning, it was above all a search for clarity, aesthetics, order, calm, serenity, stillness as an antithesis to the hectic, attention-seeking, intrusive, garish and colorful things around me. In a later phase, I turned my attention back to people and, above all, to colors."

"In our turbulent world, it is important to me to explore calm moments and situations. And then to make the turbulent visible with the help of color, light, movement, sharpness and blurriness. These poles appear again and again in different forms in the various series of works and pictures".

"The freedom to do what I enjoy is wonderful. I simply use the camera and photographic methods as a tool to create new imaginary worlds, to explore new possibilities and to better perceive color, light and shadow. The pictures are almost always taken directly on location in the camera.
