The Kohltour is a North German custom where friends, colleagues or club members hike together in the winter months, play fun games and celebrate properly. The whole thing traditionally ends with a hearty kale meal. 🥘 Sounds like fun, doesn't it?

Fancy a bit of history?

The origins of the Kohltour go back a long way. In northern Germany, especially in regions such as Lower Saxony and Bremen, it was customary to go on hikes together during the cold months. This not only strengthened the community, but also kept the body fit through exercise in the fresh air. The crowning glory was always a meal together with kale, Bregenwurst sausage and Kassler - real home cooking that warms you from the inside.

And how does that work in Hanover today?

The tradition of the cabbage tour has become wonderfully established in Hanover. One highlight is the "Kohlfahrt by Diedloff". Here you start at 2:30 pm at the Maschsee Südufer parking lot (Maschsee lido). Each group is given a handcart filled to the brim with beer, wine, schnapps, mulled wine, coffee, water, soft drinks, baguettes, cheese and salami. The route is around 4.6 kilometers long and takes around 2.5 hours with games and breaks. There will be a stop along the way to replenish supplies and for a toilet break. At around 17:00 you will reach Hangar no.5, where a mulled wine reception will be waiting for you by the fire pits. From 18:00, the buffet starts with North German specialties such as fresh kale, Bregenwurst, Kassler, potatoes, chicken schnitzel and vegetarian pasta dishes. Afterwards, the party continues with DJ music until midnight. For €75 per person, you get the complete package including a drinks flat rate. Alternatively, you can join the party from 21:00 for €39.
