He is the elementary mythical figure of the American self-image: the pioneer who follows the slogan "Go West!", advances into the wilderness and conquers the continent. He appears in many different guises, from the trapper to the settler and the cowboy to the gold prospector or railroad magnate. The immeasurable vastness of the land, the unlimited possibilities, the development of individual freedom - all this plays into this myth, which deliberately conceals the fact that the wilderness to be conquered was by no means deserted, but had been inhabited since time immemorial.
