From sadness and fear in the first two works of the program to confidence, joie de vivre and closeness to nature, the third
Philharmonic Concerto leads through a palette of human emotions.
Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings (1936) is the exciting prelude to this concert.
Leonard Bernstein's Symphony No. 2 (1948/49), entitled "The Age of Anxiety", was inspired by the poem of the same name by Wystan Hugh Auden (1907 - 1973). This unconventionally designed symphony with a solo piano part captures the rhythm and flair of New York. Extensively orchestrated and richly colored, with jazz passages and somber touches, but also transcendent moments, the piece is just as inspiring as Bernstein's better-known works.
Ludwig van Beethoven's 6th Symphony (1808), the "Pastorale", follows a program like Bernstein's work, but one devised by the composer himself. Beethoven illustrates various scenes in the countryside and in nature.
