40 Jahre ohne AZ | Sans Toit ni Loi

In the organizer's words:

40 years ago, the Autonomous Center (AZ) in Freiburg burned down. With this exhibition project, we are commemorating a good three years of intense cultural, political and artistic debate that changed Freiburg. The artist Florian Haas has created a monumental linocut with the help of photographic templates from the Social Movements Archive, which commemorates the AZ and at the same time a colleague of Haas who died at an early age and was active in the AZ. We are presenting the work Sans Toit ni Loi at a vernissage with an artist talk, after which DJ Peter Winkler will be playing music from AZ times.

The artwork will be on display throughout the weekend from January 10 to 12.

On the night of January 21-22, 1985, the Autonomous Center in Freiburg's Glacisweg burned down. A spectacular end for a spectacular institution: for a good three years, the Autonome Zentrum (AZ) had stirred up Freiburg's cultural and political scene.

This was not without conflict. On the one hand, the occupation was illegal - but was tacitly tolerated. On the other hand, the most diverse opinions, cultural and political ideas and lifestyles clashed internally. This friction gave rise to a lively debate about what a future Freiburg should look like.

We want to commemorate the AZ with a weekend of events at E-WERK Freiburg. We not only want to take a nostalgic look back, but also bring together people who are involved in political groups or cultural associations today.
