The 19th century in music history began in 1803, the year in which Beethoven created his 3rd symphony, the Eroica, heralding a new era. Beethoven was well aware that he was embarking on something extraordinary at the time. At least this is suggested by his dictum that he wanted to take a "new path" with his music. The first major work on this new path was the Eroica. In terms of sheer scope and the demands on the orchestra, Beethoven went beyond anything that had ever been composed in orchestral music in this symphony. Also new was the idea of placing the entire symphony in the vicinity of an imaginary story of a hero, which Beethoven unmistakably indicated with the title "Sinfonia Eroica". Above all, however, in this work he penetrated dimensions of dramatic depth of expression that were unknown in instrumental music.
