Lia Kohl

Lia Kohl from Chicago is a cellist, composer and sound artist. She works with field recordings, synthesizers and, of course, plays the cello. Her new album "Normal Sounds" focuses on anthropogenic, everyday and functional sounds and noises that we tend to ignore or only hear passively: Refrigerator humming, car horns or warning signals are presented in a new light by means of acoustic and electronic support. Lia Kohl invites us to listen to the world with her ears and rediscover the beauty of seemingly ordinary sounds.

AKIKO AHREND and RAISSA MEHNER (Cologne)

Akiko Ahrendt plays the violin and is interested in formats that reflect and question the classical stage situation. To this end, she likes to go out into public spaces or nature. The focus is on sound, music and human relationships, and the working method is often collective or delegated to small groups.

Akiko is a member of the Ehrenfeld Radio Dance Orchestra and performs in her own formations such as radikal translation, TONTRÆGER and the "orangen Gruppe". She is also politically active and investigates whether there can be intersections with art. For some time now, she has been playing in and with a choir that spontaneously comes together to sing political songs at demonstrations, actions and the like.

Raissa Mehner, electric guitarist and composer from Cologne, is constantly searching for the sonic limits of her instrument with the help of various effect devices and preparations.

As a bandleader and composer, she concentrates on working with her quintet 'Raissa Mehner Deviation' and celebrates playful and communicative improvisation in her duos 'wehnermehner' (git/trombone), 'Double Exposure' (git/vibraphone) and 'Bloch/Mehner' (git/church organ). In the trio 'Toxodon' (Git/Vibr/Dr) she combines hard riffs with psychedelic frills. She is also part of the oversized krautrock-impro-orchestra 'The Dorf' and the experimental jazz-pop quintet 'LARIZA', whose album 'Weave' received the Newcomer Award of the magazine 'Jazzthing' in 2022.

Raissa Mehner and Akiko Ahrendt made their debut as a duo in 2023 in the subway station of the Chorweiler shopping center, where they celebrated the clash of classes and contexts.
