In the organizer's words:

JUDITH NOVELA is back!

After two successful workshops in cooperation with Swing Times in fall 2023, we are delighted that Judith will be back in Cologne again this year - this time in our ballroom and extended to two full course hours each.

Don't miss this opportunity!

Judith Novela (*1991) is a dancer/performer and teaches traditional Mozambican dances, Afro Swing and Afro Beats worldwide. The roots of all swing dances lie in African dances, and we believe that it is meaningful and important to know and appreciate these roots.

Judith has been working locally and internationally since 2013, e.g. since its inception for the Mozambique Afro Swing Exchange, at festivals in Brazil, Bulgaria, Germany, Ivory Coast, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Sweden (Herräng Dance Camp 2013, 2018, 2019, 2023 and 2024).

She works as a dancer for the cultural association Hodi Maputo Afroswing and is a member of the groups TP50 and Kaya Ka Hina. At the end of August, she was a guest at the Düsseldorf Dance Fair with the company Converge+ and the piece Vagabundus:

Afroswing (11.00-13.00)

Judith combines traditional African movements with those from authentic jazz. We will get to know the similarities and differences in the moves of the different dance styles. We return to the roots of African-American jazz steps and find new old variations and forms of expression that enrich our dancing.

Solo moves and jam circles will be the subject of this lesson. We honor dancing in a circle as an original expression of the joy of sharing one's own desire for movement and expression, as has always been part of Mozambican dances (and parties!).

Afrobeats (14.00 - 16.00)

In Mozambique you will find dances that combine indigenous, African and European traditions of the past centuries. These influences have shaped Mozambican culture today. Thanks to its wealth of ethnic groups and languages, the country is rich in traditional dances such as Xigubo, Tahura, Tamadune, Tufo, Maulide Lingundumbwe, Nyau and Mapiko. Let yourself be surprised!

In this class Judith will explore with you the different forms and expressions of movement from Mozambican and other African traditions and we will learn what the dances are about.

Level:

The classes are suitable for dancers of all levels(no previous experience required). All fitness levels are catered for and there is a 60-minute break between the two classes.
