Ana Lessing Menjibar: Third Skin

The performance Third Skin by German-Spanish choreographer and artist Ana Lessing Menjibar is a poetic reaction to the opening up of her family history. It is dedicated to the experiences of war and fascism, the collective and individual wounds and the experiences of political resistance of three generations. In resonance with this examination, the artist, in close collaboration with her team, creates the fiction of a chimera in constant metamorphosis, which remains in a breathing connection with the present while opening up to the past and the future. In Third Skin, an energetic cosmos of body, sound, rhythm, language and sculptural objects emerges, in which the skin, as a permeable surface, becomes the carrier of markers of time. In a hybrid space between installation and stage, Ana Lessing Menjibar takes up the (body) knowledge inherent in flamenco, which understands the sharing of vulnerability as a source of dialog and as empowerment of the body. By decoding and recoding with elements from the visual arts, contemporary dance and electronic music composition, the dancing body makes reference to historically evolved structures and cultural references and makes these multisensory tangible in a mythological world.

Ana Lessing Menjibar is a German-Spanish performer, dancer, choreographer and multidisciplinary artist. She lives and works in Berlin. In her interdisciplinary practice, she weaves bodies and sound compositions into multimedia installations for which she creates electronic music, videos and sculptural elements that are understood as an extended choreographic practice for the construction of poetic worlds. She experiments with the transformative potential of flamenco in the context of performance and contemporary dance. The focus is on the knowledge that traditional dances and rhythms carry within them and the question of how this can be taken further in order to create forward-looking designs for the body and society.
