The two siblings Peter and Anneliese should be in bed by now! But who wants to sleep when a talking, violin-playing beetle called Sumsemann suddenly appears in their room? And especially when this special guest asks the children for help: for generations, the Sumsemanns have lived with a flaw - every cockchafer in this family is born with only five little legs. A wood thief used his axe to rob Sumsemann's great-great-grandfather of his sixth beetle leg. A fairy banished the thief to the moon for his deed - but with him went the lost leg. Sumsemann can only get it back if he finds brave children who dare to join him on the adventurous journey to the moon and help him defeat the moon man...

Gerdt von Bassewitz's touchingly poetic children's book in the tradition of Jules Verne was first published in 1915 and has delighted millions of young and adult readers ever since.
