"Antiqua and the English script"

Two-day calligraphy workshop with Warsaw experts

Fancy a trip back in time? When letters were still written with pen and ink and the word once written could not simply be erased. The calligraphy workshop on October 26 and 27, 2024 at the Polish Institute Düsseldorf will be led by experienced educators and experts in ancient writing culture, Ewa Behrens-Nowakowska and Małgorzata Ziemiańska from the Scriptorium Villa Nova in the Museum of King John III's Castle in Wilanów. The workshop is based on the 1833 publication "Polish, French, Latin, German and Russian Calligraphy for Polish Youth". The handbook contains samples of the English script and examples of other different scripts. It also uses humorous genre scenes to illustrate the customs of the time. As participants, you will learn and practise English cursive and compare letters in the different alphabets in order to observe the differences in the adaptation of Latin script patterns to the national alphabets. Special focus is of course on the German and Polish alphabets. Participation in the calligraphy workshops is free of charge, but registration is necessary due to the limited number of participants (see below).
