Architektur und Film-Reihe: Wir bauen in den USA

In the organizer's words:

With a new season of the film series "Wir bauen in den USA", the NRW Chamber of Architects and the Film Museum of the state capital Düsseldorf tell stories about the architecture of European emigrants.

The first German settlement in what is now the USA can be traced back to 13 Mennonite families from Krefeld who settled in Pennsylvania in the 17th century. In times of economic and political crisis, numerous architects and engineers from Germany and all over Europe also went to the North of America, often without returning.

From Johann Augustus Röbling in the 19th century to Karola Bloch, Cornelia Oberlander, Marcel Breuer and Mies van der Rohe in the 20th century, the selected documentaries report on the lives of these people and their creative work in the USA. From New York to Chicago, from New Hampshire to Massachusetts and finally across the border to Canada, the cinematic journey takes us from bridges to skyscrapers and from apartment complexes to private homes. This paints a broad picture of Europe's architectural heritage in the USA.
