The translator Rosemarie Tietze presents Lev Tolstoy's work:

Lev Tolstoy never wrote a work entitled "War in the Caucasus", but in his prose he repeatedly returned to the peoples and mountain dwellers on Russia's southern border who fascinated him. "War in the Caucasus", published by Suhrkamp in Rosemarie Tietze's new translation in 2018, brings together all of Tolstoy's Caucasian works, from the early story "The Raid" (1852) to the romantically colorful "Cossacks" (1863) and the posthumously published late work "Haji Murat".

Rosemarie Tietze will present excerpts from this prose and link them with scenes and quotations from Tolstoy's biography; the focus will not least be on the attitude that Lev Tolstoy - recently attacked as "imperial" - took towards the war. As the translator herself has traveled in the Caucasus several times, she also contributes current images and observations.

The writer and literary scholar Evgenija Grande will read the Russian passages.

Rosemarie Tietze is one of the most renowned and award-winning translators from Russian. She conceived the Munich event series "Übersetzerprofile" and received the 2024 working grant from the Free State of Bavaria for literary translators. Her new translation of Anna Karenina (2012) became a bestseller.

The event is a cooperation with the Tolstoy Library Munich.
