In his very first season as ballet director in Hamburg, John Neumeier established a format that has become an integral part of Hamburg Ballet's repertoire: the Ballet Workshop. Since September 1973, John Neumeier has conceived and moderated well over 200 ballet workshops. He has captivated several hundred thousand people with his easy-going, charming manner.

After a public training session on stage, John Neumeier gives precious insights into the creation of his ballets several times a season. The dancers rehearse in training clothes, the stage set is usually only hinted at. And the audience is right in the middle of it, because John Neumeier reveals things that one could also make a big secret about: How does he work as a choreographer with his company, what ideas flow into his creations, how do text and music shape his ballets? Audiences often get their first impressions of a new production before the premiere. The debut workshops, in which ensemble members are allowed to dance their desired roles, are also popular.

Among Hamburg audiences, the ballet workshops have long been cult: tickets for these events are sold out in no time after the advance sales start! John Neumeier deliberately keeps ticket prices for the Ballet Workshops low in order to keep this unique format open to all who are interested.
