Participatory theater - right in your neighborhood!
In May 2025, MiR.LAB will transform the streets and houses of Gelsenkirchen's Neustadt district into the stage for a galactic spectacle: The BaRockOpera. A play full of spaceships, stars and alien planets - and YOU can be a part of it!
We are looking for people of all ages who would like to help shape this unique city project. Whether it's building the stage, tailoring costumes, painting scenery or being on stage yourself - we need your help! And the highlight: three live bands will rock the stage with us. In the tradition of great festivals and touring theater troupes, a play will be created that transforms the streets of Gelsenkirchen into an intergalactic adventure - with a story that tells of distant galaxies and yet is set very close to home. Join in and become part of our city spectacle!
WHAT:
We will be tailoring costumes in Somaya Alferdawi's sewing workshop. Inspired by traditional Arabic motifs and using fabrics that we procure ourselves in Neustadt, we love everything that glitters and shines: rhinestones, satin, silver and ruffles. You will learn to take measurements from the big (and small) stars of the BaRockOpera, design tailor-made costumes and create them yourself. At the end you can see your costumes sparkle on stage - and what would a true star be without the right look? Our costumes will be on display in a small exhibition at Caritas Neustadt after the show. If they fit and you like them, you can keep them.
HOW:
Measuring, drawing, snipping, sewing, folding, spraying, designing
