Biedermann und die Brandstifter

The hair tonic manufacturer Gottlieb Biedermann is afraid. The town is repeatedly ravaged by fires and there is always talk of arson. And Gottlieb Biedermann fears nothing more than the destruction of his possessions. There is nothing he wants more than peace and quiet.

One day, when the arsonists Schmitz and Eisenring knock on Biedermann's door, he gives them shelter in the naïve hope that he will be spared precisely because of his indulgence. But neither Biedermann nor his wife Babette have anything to counter the brazen demands of the two arsonists. And so the helpless Biedermann ends up handing the arsonists the matches with which they set fire to his house and the entire town.

In his entertaining parable,Max Frisch (1911 - 1991) depicts man's willingness to ignore the warning signs of evil, even when they are already unmistakable.
