The term BIOPHILIA, coined by biologist E.O. Wilson, describes the innate affinity humans have with the natural world - the idea that we are biologically predisposed to connect with the environment. This concept is particularly relevant in the Caribbean and Latin American region, where the cultural, historical and personal stories of the artists in this exhibition are inextricably linked to the landscapes that surround them. Nature is not something they visit to escape; it is woven into the fabric of their existence. This closeness shapes how they perceive, experience and express their relationship with the environment.
But this intimate connection also makes the effects of climate change and environmental degradation deeply personal. Rising seas, deforestation and pollution threaten not only ecosystems, but also the cultural and emotional bonds the artists share with the land. Through their work, JULIANA GUITERREZ, JUAN TARDIVO & HOPE BARTLEY explore these themes in this exhibition - their love of nature, the threat of its loss and the ways in which human activity is changing the natural world. BIOPHILIA aims to highlight the deep connection the artists have with nature and invite viewers to reflect on their own relationship with the environment, especially in the context of global warming and ecological destruction.
This exhibition is not only about depicting nature, but also about entering into a dialogue with it and encouraging us to recognize our role in its preservation.
