WELT/BÜHNE: BLIND RUNNER

In the organizer's words:

BLIND RUNNER

GUEST PERFORMANCE BY THE MEHR THEATER GROUP, PARIS

In Persian with German and English surtitles

The fate of three long-distance runners is interwoven in the latest production by the renowned Iranian Mehr Theatre Group. A woman is imprisoned as a political prisoner and her husband is allowed to visit her once a week. But what do they talk about when every word is listened to and there is little new to report? The two have run marathons together, but now their relationship is in danger of running out of steam. Only reluctantly and at his wife's insistence does the man take on a new task that shortens even the short speaking times: he becomes a running companion for a blind runner and makes a lifelong dream come true for her by taking part in the Paris Marathon. The intimacy of the training leads to a close bond with the young woman - and a dangerous plan to make a political statement.

Amir Reza Koohestani uses minimalist set design to create a poetic web of relationships in which the hypnotic rhythm of the run becomes an image of support and freedom, but also of the difficulties of life on the plain in general.

"Blind Runner" premiered last year at the kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels and has been touring throughout Europe ever since. At the Residenztheater, Amir Reza Koohestani staged his adaptation of "Pygmalion", which premiered in March and can still be seen in the repertoire.
