Brad Mehldau gave the piano trio a barely expected boost of energy in the 90s. The record entitled "The Art of the Trio" catapulted the tradition-conscious innovator into the pianist's Olympus and the format back into the limelight. His former colleague Jorge Rossy on drums is also part of his current trio, as is the Danish bassist Felix Moseholm, born in 1997, the year the second "Art of the Trio" album was released. "In my improvised solos, I want to play melodic phrases that contain something harmonic and create harmonies that move in a melodic way. That's crucial for storytelling," Mehldau recently revealed. Together with his trio, he tells entire novels, whether they develop from a Beatles song, weightlessly visualize jazz standards or breathe the playful spirit of romanticism.
