CELEBRATIONS - 1822-New Year's Concert

Festive and radiant, fast-paced and swinging - this is how we will start the year 2025 with all of you! We will begin with Aaron Copland's 1942 Fanfare for the Common Man - a musical response to the "century of the common man" (as US Vice President Henry A. Wallace described the period beginning after the Second World War), in which many American composers refused to continue writing only for a cultural "elite".

You will encounter familiar melodies in George Gershwin's suite Catfish Row, which combines character studies from Porgy and Bess to create an orchestrally sophisticated Sinfonietta. Leonard Bernstein takes a similar approach when he combines stylistically diverse motifs from vocal numbers into a symphonic form in the overture to his operetta Candide. In the baroque concerto grosso, a small group of instrumentalists is always in lively dialog with the large orchestra. William Bolcom succeeds in transferring this form to the present day for four saxophones and with a colorful suite of sonata movements, songs without words, waltzes and bebop echoes. The concert program concludes with a work commissioned for the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie: with his concerto for orchestra, Daniel Schnyder once again confirms his reputation for masterfully combining different genres into a complete work.
