They existed long before mankind, and they will outlast it. They are 250 million years old - the Alps. They have seen many things come and go, seemingly silently. They have a life of their own. They were scary to our ancestors, they saw monsters, dragons, danger in the peaks. Forces beyond our control. It was only with mass tourism that people thought they could subjugate the mountains and exploit them ruthlessly.

However, a rethink is slowly taking place. Researchers, artists and philosophers are trying to approach the nature of the mountains in a new way. They reflect the contrasting approaches at a time when we need to redefine our values and actively seek change. "Bergfahrt" provides fascinating insights into the riddles that these millions of years old giants pose to us.

"Bergfahrt" shows the size and beauty of the mountains in fantastic shots and is far removed from the homely image of the Alps that we know from the media. The film shows people who are exploring this unique world heritage, people who are trying to decipher the secret life of the mountains, to understand it and to preserve it.
