Light-filled sounds awaken a longing for the south. With youthful works of German Romanticism, Maestro Riccardo Muti and his agile Chicago Symphony Orchestra pay homage to the dreamland of Italy: musical memories of happy times!
Following in Goethe's footsteps, they both traveled to sunny Naples at the age of 22 and captured their cheerful and sublime feelings in music: Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy began composing his euphoric "Italian" Symphony during the study trip. Richard Strauss created his sonorous travelogue "From Italy" in retrospect as a magnificent "symphonic fantasy" that processes sensory impressions of landscape, architecture and lifestyle.
