Chosen Family - Naught a Christmas Show
Residency and showing by queer.raum
"Blood is thicker than water". Blood is thicker than water. Blood ties hold more together, are
more important than anything else. But is that really the case? In our "Chosen Family" residency, we want to explore this question by using interdisciplinary artistic methods to research a definition of this term for us as a group. After all, people from the queer community and/or people who live differently from heteronormativity, look different, behave differently, have experienced exclusion by society - but primarily by their family of origin.
There is a longer form of the saying circulating on the internet, which often makes more sense for queer people: "The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb". Which means something like: The bonds we forge on our own through community are thicker than the bonds imposed on us through kinship. Chosen Family is stronger than family of origin.
Different materials and media are used to approach the topic of elective kinship: song lyrics, scrolls and diaries are created. Storytelling is used to share experiences with the other participants and inspire further artistic creation. Stories are expressed in music and dance and inspire make-up looks, photographs and collages.
