A man who has always been faithful to his wife and a woman who has never experienced love are being sought at a party. When they meet, they fall in love - she, the bold aviatrix, and he, the prudent husband, father and politician. Cynthia Darrington, played by Katharine Hepburn, is a self-confident woman who wears men's clothes (the scene in which she goes to a costume party dressed as a moth is great), drives fast cars, breaks records with her plane and generally radiates a self-evident independence that initially fascinates her lover Christopher, but then becomes scary for him. She is unable to counter the double standards of the time, and love becomes her undoing. The relationships between the sexes (Cynthia is deliberately coded as multivalent) and the classes are questioned.
