ClubJazz: Mainz 04

In the organizer's words:

Behind Mainz 04 are four saxophonists who have been playing together for almost twenty years. "We met in 2004 during our studies in Mainz," recalls baritone saxophonist Steph Winzen, which incidentally explains the band's name. Soprano, alto, tenor and baritone: Mainz 04 has almost the same classical line-up as the World Saxophone Quartet, but there are also role models in Germany: "The Cologne Saxophone Mafia," admits Winzen, "is an inspiration for us."
Johannes Lind in particular writes the songs for the ensemble, but the three other band members have also added their names to the list of composers. "We mainly wanted to include original compositions and arrangements by artists we really admire," says Winzen, explaining the musical concept. "For example, we managed to squeeze Pat Metheny's 'Minuano' into an arrangement for saxophone quartet quite well."
For the title track of the new album "Faces", Lind was inspired by the late piano pieces of Johannes Brahms, while other pieces were inspired by Béla Bartók or heavy metal. "The individual has an idea and the others are usually taken with it," says Winzen, describing the process of creating the repertoire.
Contemporary influences from classical music to metal are exemplary of what is possible with a saxophone quartet - at the same time, the sound of Mainz 04 is so sensual that "Faces" is an acoustic experience even for jazz fans who have little understanding of the intricacies of arrangements for four saxophones. After almost twenty years, Mainz 04 have now ventured into a studio - the result proves that sometimes what lasts a long time does indeed turn out well.
