Cold Hubris – Understanding Colonialism and Museums through Poetry

Reading and literary discussion with Alma Simba and PD Dr. Sarah Fekadu-Uthoff as part of the program accompanying the special exhibition Colonialism in Things on Thursday, 6 February 2025 at 7 pm at the Museum Fünf Kontinente.

The Tanzanian historian and poet Alma Simba will give an insight into her lyrical work, which deals with the colonial past and the theft of cultural assets. She will then talk to literary scholar PD Dr. Sarah Fekadu-Uthoff about the ways in which poetry opens up ways of understanding colonialism.
In conversation, they will explain why the origins of museum collections cannot be deciphered by science alone, but why art is needed to address gaps in cultural archives and traumas in post-colonial societies.
