Crossing

In the organizer's words:

The paths of different people cross in Istanbul: Retired teacher Lia and young Achi from Georgia have set off together from Batumi in search of Lia's niece Tekla, a trans woman who has left her hometown. On their way, Lia and Achi meet many different people who try to help them.

"Crossing" is an ode to Istanbul, its steep alleyways and expansive waterways, its vibrant nightlife and the diverse faces that populate the city. But it is also an ode to what unites people - to song, dance, cohesion, empathy and friendship. The film captivates with its impressive camera and lighting design, which captures tender and painful moments and imaginatively narrates the connections between the characters.

As part of a seminar at the Slavic Institute in cooperation with the Filmhaus Köln, students from the University of Cologne visited the goEast film festival in Wiesbaden in April 2024, giving them the opportunity to watch numerous impressive works by Eastern European filmmakers. Following the seminar, the students selected two films from the goEast program - one of them is "Crossing" by Georgian filmmaker Levan Akin (2024).
