Dafa Puppet Theater
Husam Abed was born and raised in Baqa'a, the largest Palestinian refugee camp in Jordan. While the audience sits around the table and the food is prepared, he uses music and puppets, video projections, objects, photos, cards, tin, wire, paper, wood and rice to tell the story of his family's diaspora since the Palestinian Nakbah catastrophe of 1948. Abed speaks loudly, whispers, bangs his fist on the table, sings and dances. As a guest, you get very close to something that seems very far away.
Husam Abed, Palestinian-Jordanian theater director, puppeteer, musician and producer, lives in Kladno/Czech Republic. He holds a Master's degree in Directing for Alternative and Puppet Theater from DAMU (Czech Republic) and is a PhD student at Bath Spa University (UK). He is a co-founder of the Prague-based theater group Dafa Puppet Theatre, the LIV'in Festival in the Czech Republic and the Ya Kahyal Theatre Lab for refugees and local youth in Jordan. His plays have been presented at festivals in Europe, the USA, Arab countries and South East Asia.
