On this evening, journalist and journalism professor Sabine Böhne-Di Leo introduces the audience to an all-important phase of German history. She gives a vivid account of the drafting of the Basic Law by the members of the Parliamentary Council in 1948/1949, which was a feat of strength against the backdrop of the Berlin Blockade, the Allies' requirements, the differing ideas of the parties and federal states and the question of whether Josef Stalin would prevent the founding of a western German state. It was a new beginning - which could only succeed because all democratic parties put themselves at the service of the cause, across all political boundaries and with respect for their political opponents.
