If you want to understand the fascination of wine, Rioja in Spain is the perfect place. Since the Roman Empire, the people here have lived and worked in harmony with nature amidst the vineyards. THE COUNTRY OF A THOUSAND WINES accompanies them and shows the diverse ways of life that are reflected in their wines. Director and cultural historian José Luis López-Linares tells the story of winegrowers whose families have been cultivating the vineyards for centuries, of the women's collective that strives for solidarity in production and marketing, and of the star chef who searches for the perfect combination of food and drink. They have all dedicated their heart and soul to wine and provide a rare insight into its unique and universal cultural history. Between lovingly preserved craft traditions and true wine connoisseurship, a cinematic declaration of love to a unique culture of enjoyment is created, which is inextricably linked to the history of mankind.
