Secluded from the world in the vaults deep beneath the Paris Opera House lives the Phantom, who has to hide his horribly disfigured face behind a mask. His love is music and a young singer from the opera chorus. This outcast monster is played by the magnificent Lon Chaney, the "man with a thousand faces". Count Bothmer's music portrays the phantom not as a dangerous fury, but also as a lonely, tragically loving creature. This elaborately staged film thus becomes two things: a horror story full of atmosphere and a poignant ballad. This first film adaptation - and not the book - was the model for Lloyd Webber's opera.
