To this day, David Friedman has retained a curiosity that keeps him looking to the future.
"What I admire about David Friedman is that he never says that everything was better in the past," says Tilo Weber, explaining his fascination with his former teacher's attitude.

A few years ago, Friedman founded the independent jazz label Malletmuse Records together with Tilo Weber. The brand new album "Surge of silence", recorded in Sardinia, has now been released there with the generation trio, with whom the three are now going on a birthday tour.

The three generations with shooting star Tilo Weber on drums, sought-after sideman Oliver Potratz on bass and retired jazz professor David Friedman on vibraphones develop an amazingly orchestral band sound that is fresh and hip and at the same time firmly rooted in the deep tradition of jazz. All three musicians are phenomenally omnipresent, even when one is playing a solo alone you can hear the others!
You hear the vibraphone exactly as it sounds best: rhythmically forced, intervallic, willfully in love with bebop, crystalline-linear, harmonically tilted, risky-constructive.
The vibraphone demands courage - and courageous players. "It doesn't matter what I write," says master David Friedman about his trio. "The two of them eat it up, without fear, reservation or consideration." Why is his band called "Generations Trio"? Friedman turned 80 at the beginning of the year, his bassist Oliver Potratz is in his forties and drummer Tilo Weber is still in his thirties.
