In the organizer's words:

The economic situation in Güllen is bad. The small town is ruined, crumbling and neglected. A visit from billionaire Claire Zachanassian, the town's most famous daughter, is supposed to halt the decline. To boost the charity of the rich and powerful woman, the town music band plays in her honor on the market square and the gymnastics club forms a pyramid. However, the people of Güllen place their greatest hopes in Alfred Ill, their most popular fellow citizen, who tries to flatter his childhood sweetheart. The old lady is actually prepared to give Güllen no less than a billion marks - on one condition: Someone must kill Alfred Ill, who abandoned her when she was a pregnant young woman and denied his paternity. Outraged, the mayor rejects her offer. In the name of humanity. But Claire Zachanassian is patient.

Friedrich Dürrenmatt himself calls his play "a tragic comedy"; almost like a parable, it deals with justice and revenge, greed and fragile morals, hypocrisy and human weakness.
