Tragic comedy by Friedrich Dürrenmatt. Güllen - a town somewhere in Europe: once rich, now bankrupt, left behind, run-down. But Claire Zachanassian, a wealthy woman who was humiliated here in earlier times, gives cause for hope when she offers the town a billion. Her former lover is to die for it. The amoral offer is rejected. But wealth beckons and the temptation grows ever greater. Ethically correct behavior versus the common good: a bitter parable about the omnipotence of money in our affluent society.
