Molière's comedy "The Miser" premiered at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal in 1668. 355 years later, Slovenian director Mateja Koležnik is staging the still highly topical material in the banking city of Frankfurt. It is about nothing less than avarice, one of the seven "main vices" of mankind. Koležnik finds the theme of human transgression in Molière's ludicrous comedy. While Molière shows the main character, Harpagon, in the character contortions that his love of money entails, Koležnik hardly recognizes any moral differences between the characters involved. Harpagon also confuses the usual meanings of money and love. For him, money is an erotic fetish, whereas for Harpagon, marriage is viewed solely in financial terms. All the people involved are united by the fact that they are hiding or concealing something. A game of confusion about desires and their attainment can begin!
